Front of House Managing the Southwark Playhouse, a busy receiving house comprising of two theatre spaces and bar. This post was created specifically to hone front-of-house operations.
Alongside the day-to-day running of a busy arts venue, my role included recruiting and training all paid Front of House staff and managing a pool of over 50 volunteer Front of House Assistants. This included inductions for all staff and volunteers, on-the-job training, timesheet management and rota scheduling. I implemented a number of new systems and initiatives, these included contracts for all FoH staff, a new monthly pay scheme, as well as changing suppliers and stock lines, ensuring the best quality and customer services throughout the department.
Prior to the Southwark Playhouse, I worked in other venue management positions for over 12 years, one venue included Trinity Laban, a world-class conservatoire for contemporary dance that also doubles as a busy and thriving performance venue for cutting-edge programs and events from across the world.
The 2003 Sterling Prize-winning building houses a 300-seat auditorium, an additional 100-seat studio theatre, plus 12 dance studios, a café and a theatre bar. As the first Front of House and Bar Manager in these new premises, I interviewed, employed and trained all FoH staff, set up all FoH systems, wrote all job descriptions and emergency procedures, managed bar and cafe budgets, and sourced all bar equipment and supplies. During this time I was also trained to use the Spektrix ticketing system used by the box office. At Laban I was a key member of the events team and hosted countless events. Managing events involved meeting clients for initial site visits, assessing their needs, room setup and managing a team of staff on the day of the events - also follow-up meetings to ensure clients were happy with their hires.
Before my 8-year tenure at Laban I also worked as Front of House Manager at the Drill Hall, a busy arts centre comprising of two theatre spaces, rehearsal rooms and dark room suites. This was an invaluable opportunity to learn many of the skills that I went on to develop at Trinity Laban and beyond.
